How common are Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
- Approximately 19 million new cases each year
- Half of these are in 15-24 year olds
- Human papillomavirus, trichomoniasis and chlamydia are the most common STIs
- 1 in 5 Americans age 12 and over has genital herpes; most do not know it
- Half a million Americans have dies from HIV/AIDS
Contraception & STIs (STDs)
- Sexual activity places you at a high risk for getting STIs; using contraception does not eliminate that risk
- Non-barrier methods such as birth control pills, patches or injections offer NO protection from STIs
- Some contraceptives may even increase the risk of certain infections:
-Birth Control pills - Chlamydia
-Diaphragms with Spermicides - Bacterial Vaginosis
-IUDs - Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
-Depo-Provera - Chlamydia & Gonorrhea
Diseases/Infections that can be passed by oral sex
- Syphilis (highly contagious)
- Gonorrhea (highly contagious, throat infections are common)
- Herpes (moderately contagious, even without sores)
- HPV (can cause warts on vocal cords)
- HIV
- Chlamydia
Should I be tested?
Who should be tested?
- Sexually active people (vaginal, oral or anal) at least once a year under 25 years old
- Anyone who has had a new sex partner within the past 6 months
- Anyone who’s partner has been sexually active with someone else before them
- Partners of infected people
- Intravenous drug users
